7 to 8 Digits Mobile Subscriber Number Conversion in Pakistan

March 28, 2008 – 10:50 pm | by Shafiq Rehman

Over the past few years, Telecoms Sector in Pakistan is growing rapidly. Due to the rapid growth of mobile subscribers there is shortage of number, therefore telecoms companies and PTA had been planning to upgrade the entire infrastructure of mobile number formating to accomplish this goal. So they decided to change the 7 digits to 8 digits.

pta announced number format upgradation

As you all know that our mobile numbers consist of two parts. First part is the mobile operator code (e.g. 0300) and other part is actual number (e.g. 4239385). Current mobile codes consist of 4 digits and subscriber number consist of 7 digits. The proposed solution is to minimize the operator code to 3 digits and the actual number to 8 digits.

Good thing for the subscribers about this solution is that your number will remain same after this conversion if you are using Mobilink, Ufone, Warid, Telenor or Paktel. However there is an impact on the subscribers of AJK, Northern Areas and instaphone.

According to PTA’s latest updates on their site, this scheme will be effective from 1st April, 2008. From April 1st to June 30, 2008 both old and news number will be active. After 1st July, 2008 only new number will be considered valid. More detail can be found on Telcompk & PTA

New Proposed Mobile operator codes are as follows:

New Code

030 Mobilink
031 Paktel
032 Warid
033 Ufone
034 Telenor
035 SCO
036 InstaPhone
037 Reserved
038 Reserved
039 Reserved

TelecomPK tells answer to my above question. It says
    ————————-
PTA site provides 3 reasons for this change.
    (a) to resolve the problem of frequent allocation of network access code to
various mobile operators to meet the needs arising out of phenomenal growth
    in the cellular mobile sector
    (b) to create more capacity in the Numbering Plan to facilitate service providers
to expand their customer base without going into the hassle of introducing
    new access codes
    (c) to make the dialing plan more customer friendly i.e. one access code for one
operator and to prepare the capacity for next ten years and more, both for the
    mobile and fixed line markets
    ————————-

    (a) & (c) are very much understandable. But I am not sure about point (b) — what you think?

    Interesting.

But what difference will it create? As we see mobilink is already issuing numbers for 0300-8
and 0309 will be available for them too.

Similarly other operators has more than one codes too and can extend codes to all available 9 digits.

    Am i wrong?
